If you’re planning a trip, you should definitely consider scheduling some surf time in the crystal waters of Hawaii. On this list, you’ll find the best surfing beaches in Hawaii.

Famous Surf Beaches in Hawaii

We have divided the list by islands: Kauai, Oahu and Mauai, to help you decide where to go first and have some Hawaiian surfing adventures.

Kauai

Poipu Beach kauai
  • Poipu Beach

Located at the Southern shore, Poipu Beach is ideal not only because it’s a regular spot where surf lessons are offered, but also as a place to practice other water sports and spend the day relaxing. This is an ideal beach if you are traveling with kids since there’s small waves here and it has a family-friendly reputation.

  • Kalapaki Beach

This natural harbor is a good option for beginners. It has clean and soft waves during summer and spring seasons, but you can also surf it all year round. Another advantage is that it’s not always crowded. Normally, the waves break offshore making it easy to surf.

Oahu

sunset beach
  • Sunset Beach

This beach is popular among professional surfers because of its spectacular but dangerous waves. The Triple Crown of Surfing Championship is celebrated here every December. And in case you don’t want to surf, you can always relax on the beach and watch the sunset.

  • Chun’s Reef

Also known as just Chun’s, this beach has 2 main sections that allow separating the beginner area from the higher difficulty spot, so everyone can enjoy their time on the water safely. You’ll find a lot of companies offering surfing lessons at different prices here.

Maui

Maui beaches
  • Launiupoko Beach Park

Locally known as a playground for water sports, is located on the west side of Maui. There are three spectacular surf breaks that go off during medium-size southern swells and in wintertime, where you’ll be able to watch the whales from the shore.

  • Lahaina Breakwall

This surfing spot is located in front of the rock breakwall of Lahaina Harbor. It’s a very popular surfing spot for beginners because of the small waves you can find here, and a lot of surfing lessons are held here. You might expect a very crowded beach at any time of the year and quite a few people taking surfing classes. But hey, the more the merrier when you’re trying to learn how to catch a wave.
