Enjoying Thanksgiving on Kauai

A trip to the Garden Isle of Kauai during the holiday season is filled with excitement and festivities for people of ages. One of the events, the annual Turkey Trot at Kapaa Beach Park, gives families another way to spend time while getting fit. Kapaa Beach Park is located on the island’s east shore and is frequented by locals and visitors alike due to its rocky shoreline, ancient habitation ruins, and clear blue waters. Nature lovers and watersports enthusiasts love its quiet and picturesque scenery.

On Thanksgiving Day every year since 2011, Kauai’s active lifestyle boutique Work It Out has worked in collaboration with area businesses and organizations to present the Old Town Kapaa Turkey Trot. The 5k/10k fun walk, run, and bike event begins at 6:45 a.m. for check-in and ends around 8:00 a.m. or until the last participant finishes. The event is free to the public, so no registration fee is required to sign up, but donations of non-perishable food items for Hale Ho’omalu (an area family support center serving East Kauai) are accepted. Voluntary monetary donations to the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce are also being accepted until the race begins. On-site registration for the event is required.

After check-in, the trot begins at 7:30 a.m. through the park. Upon completion, participants can enjoy an early breakfast at one of the over 20 restaurants within minutes or savor a shaved ice treat under the warm sun. The peaceful beach is a great place to relax and recharge for the holiday events later Thanksgiving Day, which includes a vegan twist to the annual feast at the Bhakti Yoga Shack in Anahola. For a more traditional setting, The Salvation Army of the Hawaiian & Pacific Islands is holding two Thanksgiving luncheons on the island between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Regardless of how you decide to spend your Thanksgiving, we hope you will enjoy the beginning of the holiday season with friends and loved ones. Better yet, we hope you enjoy it on Kauai!
