The aim of the event is to celebrate Hawaiian culture, from food to traditional crafts and fine arts. There will be many artisan vendors and craftspeople selling traditionally made items. One particular native craft that will be featured is lauhala, which is a special type of basket weaving. In addition to buying beautiful ready made baskets, there will be lauhala demonstrations along with coconut weaving and Hawaiian kapa making stations. Owning a piece of authentic Hawaiian memorabilia is wonderful, but actually seeing artisans at work on their craft is an amazing experience.

Live dance and music performances will be held all day and will provide entertainment for guests of all ages. Another festive activity at May Day by the Bay will be the lei making craft station. The lei has been a symbol of friendship for a very long time in the Hawaiian culture making it a memorable keepsake.

If you’re a food lover, you won’t want to miss the culinary displays. Chocolate covered bananas and kulolo (a delicious sweet pudding) are just some of the tempting treats that will be available. Other activities at May Day by the Bay will include hands on crafts and games such as konane, the Hawaiian version of the classic game checkers.

There will also be a silent auction and displays from several of Kauai’s community organizations. The auction will benefit the island’s nonprofits and you’ll be able to learn more about what the community groups of Kauai are doing to improve life for all of the area’s locals.

This annual community event will take place on May 14, 2016 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Waioli Beach Park. Children 5 years old and younger are admitted for free and admission is $5 per person for everyone else. To experience exciting cultural activities, eat delicious food, and enjoy the company of new friends, be sure to attend May Day by the Bay on Kauai.
