Christmas on Kauai

Winter may by icy in many other parts of the US, but in Hawaii the weather is still mild enough to head to the beach and comfortably jaunt around town to different holiday events. Kauai is a particularly fun place to visit during the Christmas season and there’s plenty of activities available to get you into a festive mood. Here are two Christmas events on the island that are well worth checking out.

20th Annual Festival of Lights

Kauai’s Festival of Lights is a wonderful tradition that lasts almost the entire month of December. The tradition goes back over 50 years and began with a woman loving referred to by locals as Auntie Josie. She would craft Christmas decor from re-purposed materials, put on fantastic displays at her home, and invite neighbors to come in and see it all. After she passed, the Festival became a way to keep her legacy alive and bring the community together. Along with crafty ornaments made by Kauai residents you’ll see the original tree comprised of 7,500 toothpicks that Auntie Josie Chansky made years ago. In 2016 the Festival of lights will take place at Kauai’s Historic County Building from December 2nd through December 24th, in addition to a final night on December 30th. The event will go from 6:00pm to 8:00pm every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and it’s free to attend.

Christmas Dinner at RumFire

Dining in Kauai during Christmas is unlike anywhere else, especially if you go to a restaurant that specializes in serving up Hawaiian style dishes. RumFire, which is at the Sheraton Kauai Resort, will serve a unique holiday dinner selection on Christmas day. Each starter, entree, and dessert can be paired with a specially crafted holiday cocktail made to complement the dish’s flavors. Some of the offerings include Scallop Truffle Bisque, Guava Bellini, Honey Rum Glazed Ham, and Wasabi Crusted Prime Rib with Maui onion au jus and citrus honey carrots.

The dessert will be Koloa Rum strawberries with basil syrup and pink peppercorn meringue, and its cocktail pairing is an Eggnog White Russian. In addition to the delicious food, you’ll be able to get a beautiful view of the oceanfront right from your seat at the restaurant. RumFire will be open from 4:00pm to 9:30pm on Christmas day, and it’s best to make a reservation to ensure that you get a table. (call 808-742-4786).
