Valentine’s Day on Kauai

Valentine’s Day – the day of love and romance that should be shared with your sweetheart. While it may seem that a perfect Kauaian February 14th should include time relaxing at the beach or out to a candlelit dinner, have you ever thought about spending the day on the water? As a monk seal, I don’t have much of a choice, but you never hear my love-bug complaining when we spend our day-of-love out at sea.

Screen shot 2014-02-11 at 9.49.03 PMFor an authentic Kauaian experience, consider taking your sweetheart kayaking at Hanalei Bay. This massive bay sits on the north shore and is protected by a large barrier reef that creates a calm surf, attracting swimmers and beginner surfers. The bay itself is an impressive sight and can be best appreciated from the historic Hanalei pier. Just east of the pier, you’ll find Hanalei River which widely weaves through Kauai’s tropical forest, reminding visitors why we call our home “The Garden Island.”

IMG_2933 IMG_2863Your romantic excursion starts at Kayak Kauai, a local vendor that rents kayaks, paddles, and life-vests right there on the river. The company was founded by two brothers who were passionate about kayaking, leaving no Kauaian waterway untravelled. While not required, you could always sign up for a guided tour of the river. Still, my personal recommendation is to stick with your honey and brave the river just the two of you – it’s safe and you can venture where you please. At the end of your excursion, feel free to paddle into the bay and watch surfers ride in and out. The kayaks rent for approximately $20/day, leaving you flexibility to stay on the river for as long or as short as you please. Though, from experience, when you’re on the water with your sweetie, you may never want to return – especially on a day like Valentine’s Day.
